(NT 0432 3788) Tower House (NR) (Site of)

OS 25" map, (1940).

The Tower or Fortalice stood here. Probably, as it stood in a commanding position, it was a fortified building for the defence of the town, or it may have been a predecessor of Boghall Castle. It was bequeathed to the Rev A Livingston in 1659.

W Hunter 1867.

The Revision Ordance Survey Name Book (ONB) states that it is supposed to be 12th century, the site subsequently being occupied by an inn, a slaughter-house, and a school. On the E side of the present building is a lintel inscribed 'ORD ET LABORD UT FLOREANT STUDID - 1691', no doubt part of the old school.

Information from Revision ONB c 1900 and G Rae, Official Guide to Biggar.

The present building is a dwelling house and appears to be completely modernised although the inscription is still visible above the door on the NE wall.

Visited by OS(RD) 23 July 1972.
