(NS 9905 6832) Kirton House (NAT) (1599)

OS 6" map (1856)

Kirkton House, an old mansion house three storeys high and slated, but in middling repair, is dated 1599 over the entrance.

Name Book 1856

Mr J Spalding (Burgh Surveyor) stated that when laying the paddling pool for the public park, at NS 9909 6831, some stones, probably foundations, were unearthed, they were said to belong to Kirkton House. An old informant at Kirkton House Farm stated that the 'old Kirkton House stood where the pool is, it was demolished about 100 years ago'. The present house, though containing a few armorial stones etc, is a modern building.

No further information. The probable site is now occupied by ornamental gardens.

Visited by OS (JLD) 10 December 1952.
