The Ordnance Survey Name Book (ONB) records that the site of Falkirk market cross is marked by a circle of paving stones, adjacent to the Steeple, 12' W of the Cross Well (Name Book 1860).

A charter given to Falkirk by Charles I includes authority for a market cross to be erected.
