NS71SW 13 c. 746 108.

Traces of ancient buildings exist N of the present house of Drumbuie (NS 746 108). A stone dated 1513 and a coat of arms of ancient design have been found.

J Brown 1891

The land north of Drumbuie towards the River Nith is intensively cultivated. Drumbuie is of 19th century external appearance. There is no local knowledge of an earlier house, the 'building traces' or a dated stone, though Mr J Williams (of Drumbuie, 40 years an employee at the house) indicated a carved stone tablet inserted in an inner wall of a stone-built (19th century ?) byre at NS 7470 1081. The tablet, much worn and distempered, measures 0.3m square and apparently depicts in relief a crude torso and detached head with lugged ears. Evidently of great age, its purpose and provenance is not known, but it is doubtfully part of a coat of arms.

Visited by OS (JRL) 28 March 1978.
