The ancient residence of the Hamiltons of Dalserf was Alton (or Auldtown), now converted into a farm-steading.

New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845.

The date 1610 appears in raised figures on the north-eastern corner of the old mansion. The detached house on the south-west is said to be a part of the old offices of the mansion.

OS Name Book 1859.

The original building is a two-storey rectangular structure of rubble masonry, and has been added to at various times. Above the entrance door, on the south, is the date '1610'. (The building is shown on OS 6" as roofless in 1914, but it is now in use as a farmhouse).
