(NS 6095 7940) Ballencleroch (NR)
OS 6" map, (1958)
Ballencleroch, originally a modest laird's house of the 17th century, has grown to its present size as a result of extensive additions made in 1852-3 to the S and W of the original block, the walls of which, barring minor alterations introduced to suit the later work, are more or less entire. The original building, T-shaped on plan, comprised two storeys and an attic. A small wing, now gutted of its staircase, projects from the middle of the S side.
The lands of Ballencleroch belonged to the Brisbane family from early years of the 15th c, being sold to the MacFarlans in 1642, the house of 1655 being built by James MacFarlan. The estate passed from the family in 1921.
RCAHMS 1963, visited 1953
Ballencleroch, now an hotel, is an extensive mansion the NE part of which is the original 17th century house. It has been greatly modernised and has lost most of its original character. The walls have been harled, and modern windows added.
Visited by OS (J L D) 25 March 1957 and (J P) 15 January 1974.
