(NS 5455 7785) Gallow Hill (NAT)

OS 6" map, Stirlingshire, 2nd ed., (1923)

The Gallow Knowe of Mugdock. This is the old name of the high ground just behind Craigend Castle, and where the gallows of the Barony of Mugdock stood. "The remains of the gallows were removed towards the close of last century, James Scott, the grandfather of David Scott now at Craigallian (the estate adjoining that of Craigend Castle) being the man who cleared away the last relics in Strathblane of the once coveted right to hang one's fellow creatures".

J G Smith 1886.

The Gallow Hill now forms part of a Zoological Garden, the property of Messrs Wilson of Glasgow, and is completely overgrown.

Visited by OS (W M J) 21 July 1951.
