(NS 6013 6546) Darnley's Cottage (NR) (Site of)

OS 25" map, (1968)

When Lord Darnley was in Glasgow ill with smallpox, he stayed in a house somewhere near the Cathedral and Castle. In the 19th century, the cottage, used as a barber's shop, was known as "Darnley's Cottage". It is not likely that Darnley stayed here; the name was probably applied in irony (Glasgow Evening News 1935).

New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845; Name Book 1858; Glasgow Evening News 1935.

This house has been demolished and the site built over.

Visited by OS (W M J) 5 September 1951.
