(NS 5631 6273) Haggs Castle (NR)

OS 6" map, (1967)

Haggs Castle, built 1585 (date indicated on panel above entrance) was restored a few years before 1889. It is tall and L-shaped, with a semi-circular stair-turret projecting in the centre of the W wall. The walls are of rubble, and provided with a number of unusual squared gunloops as well as small circular shot-holes. (The alterations made during restoration may be seen by comparing the plan and illustration of about 1845 with the appearance in 1965.)

D MacGibbon and T Ross 1887-92; N Tranter 1962-70.

The castle is still occupied.

Visited by OS (J L D) 1 April 1954.
