The Gorbals Baronial Tower, and the adjoining Chapel of St Ninian were erected between Chapel Close and Rutherglen Loan about 1651-3 by Robert Douglas, Viscount Belhaven. A former owner of the estate was Sir George Elphinstone, and the tower is often called the "Elphinstone Tower" because it was believed to have been built by him. The upper portions of the tower were removed in 1849 and the entire structure demolished in 1870 when the street was reconstructed. A Gothic arched doorway of the chapel remained in 1859.

The site of this tower is now covered by a modern tenement building, and no traces remain of it or the chapel.
