(NS 3383 4556) Clonbeith Castle (NR) (remains of)

OS 6" map (1970)

Clonbeith Castle is a simple oblong mansion, dated '1607' above the doorway. It is now very ruinous, measuring 37 1/2ft by 23ft, with walls 2 1/2ft thick. The ground floor has been vaulted, and the upper floors have now been demolished.

D MacGibbon and T Ross 1889

Clonbeith Castle is as described. It is in a dilapidated state of repair, but remains a fine example of a small, early 17th century mansion. A modern, wooden outshed is attached to its W wall.

Visited by OS (JLD) 3 September 1956

This ruin (name verified) is situated in the middle of a farmyard. It is as described, except that most of its N wall has recently been demolished to make an access way to a new barn, which abuts the W wall of the castle. The interior is used as a dump.

Revised at 1:2500.

Visited by OS (JRL) 14 October 1982
