(NS 3185 5378) Long Cist found (NAT)

OS 25" map (1973)

An empty stone coffin, 6 1/2 feet long by 2 1/2 feet wide, was found about 1792 by Mr G Dickie of Nether Mill, when cutting the present road near the Mill pond. Its remains were used in the construction of the road.

Name Book 1855

This site falls in an area of disturbed ground, but nothing remains that can be identified with the long cist. Though the New Statistical Account (NSA 1845) states that it was found 'near the base of a large barrow or mound', this feature, at NS 3184 5377, is not an antiquity.

Visited by OS (RDL) 12 May 1964.
