(NS 3379 2199) Laigh Tolbooth (NR) (Site of)

OS 25" map (1961)

The Old or Laigh Tolbooth stood at the corner of Newmarket Street, on a site now marked by an island of modern buildings. It appears to have become disused about the end of the 16th century and its remains were removed in 1810. Sir William Wallace, is said to have been imprisoned here; a stone head, supposed to represent him, adorned the front of the old building (c/f NS32SW 13 & NS32SW 51).

W Dodd 1972; J H Pagan 1897; J Stillie 1864

As stated, a block of modern buildings occupies the site of this Tolbooth. A plaque on the wall states: "Here stood the Laigh Tolbooth. Pre-17th century".

Visited by OS (JLD) 28 December 1955

The foundations of the Laigh Tolbooth have been preserved in the basement of one of the shops on the site.

R W Brash and A Leach 1972

The plaque is situated at NS 3380 2198.

Visited by OS (MJF) 6 November 1980
