(NS 4786 5682) Neil's Stone (NR) (site of)

OS 6" map (1970)

A tradition exists of a combat between two chiefs named Arthur and Neil. Both died of their wounds, the former being buried at the site of the Arthurlie Cross (of 10th - 11th century date: see NS45NE 5) while the latter was buried at Cross Stone Brae south of Neilston village, where a sepulchral cross is known to have been standing at the end of the 18th century.

T E Cooke 1873

The Ordnance Survey Name Book (ONB), indicating that "Neil's Stone" had stood here, repeats the tradition, and adds that the parish name derives from it. However, Barrow states that the parish name presumably means "Nigel's tun or manor", the Nigel or Neil in question probably being a sub-tenant under the Crocs (of Crookston) in the 12th century.

Name Book 1857; G W S Barrow 1973

No information regarding the present location of this stone was obtained during field investigation. The site is at present a piece of waste ground.
