(NS 33481512) Auchendrane Castle (NR) (Site of)

OS 6" map (1958)

Auchendrane Castle is described by Abercrummie as 'an high tower with laigh buildings surrounded with good orchards and gardens'. It became ruinous in the 18th century, and some remains could still be seen in 1837. The present mansion of Auchendrane was built on the site in 1856.

NSA 1845; J Paterson 1846; A Miller 1885; W Macfarlane 1907; R Bryden 1915.

The OS siting, slightly off the northwest corner of the mansion, was confirmed by the owner, Col. Galloway. No trace of the castle remains.
