(NR 4618 5370) Standing Stone (NR)
OS 6" map, Argyllshire, 2nd ed., (1900)
This standing stone, situated in a field about 1/4 mile N of Claggain, is about 4ft high, 1ft 6ins broad and 10ins thick. It is of the same character as the numerous other standing stones on Islay.
Name Book 1878.
Presumably the stone described above had been removed by 1959 as the Islay Survey Group describe a rough boulder (an erratic, not a standing stone) 5ft 8ins high, 4ft 10ins broad and 3ft 7ins thick.
F Celoria 1959.
A large upright boulder 1.7m by 0.9m by 1.7m high.
It is not possible to determine whether this is an erratic or a prehistoric standing stone. There is no stone in the vicinity resembling that described in the Ordnance Survey Name Book (ONB 1878).
Surveyed at 1:10,000.
Visited by OS (BS) 21 June 1978.
