(NR 6919 4317) Dun Beachaire (Fort) (NR)

OS 6" map, (1924)

This dun is situated at a height of 75m OD on a low ridge. Roughly rectangular on plan, it measures 17.5m by 13.5m within a wall 3.0m thick. The core of the wall has been severely robbed, but the outer face, which is composed of large blocks of stone up to 1.2m in length, can be traced intermittently on all four sides, while two short stretches of the inner face are visible on the NW. A gap in the centre of the SE side probably represents the original entrance, and a slab nearby, measuring 1.5m in length and 0.7m in thickness, may have been a lintel-stone.

RCAHMS 1971, visited 1965.

Dun Beachaire (name verified) is as described and planned by RCAHMS.

Surveyed at 1:2500.

Visited by OS (J B) 12 December 1977.
