(NR 3892 6831) Burial Ground (NR)

OS 6" map, Argyllshire, 2nd ed., (1900)

An old burial ground which is said to be the place of interment of emasculated women who are said to have formed part of the household of the Lords of the Isle who had their principal residence on an island in Loch Finlaggan (NR36NE 6) after their expulsion from the Isle of Man in AD 1304.

Name Book 1878.

The burial ground measures 11.0m NW-SE by 7.5m and is sub-oval on plan. It is embanked on the west and south, and delimited by an earthen bank, 0.9m high and spread 3.0 to 4.0m broad, on the other two sides. A break in the bank at the NW angle would indicate an entrance. The west side of the burial ground is incorporated in an old field bank.

Surveyed at 1:10 000.

Visited by OS (JM), 5 June 1978.
