Older references name this site as 'House of Portlethen' but Mr Walker who removed the remains some years ago, states that it was a castle of the same style of architecture and period as Muchals Castle (NO89SE 6).

Name Book 1865.

No remains of this castle can now be found at the Mains of Portlethen.

Visited by OS November 1961.

The remains of the former house of Portlethen were removed in the 19th century. It was probably built in 1630, and an initialled skewput bearing that date is incorporated in the present farmhouse; a second re-used skewput bears the date 1683, and a third is undated.

RCAHMS 1984, visited February 1983.

Name Book 1865; J A Henderson 1890; W Macfarlane 1906-8.

Listed.

Scottish Castle Survey 1988; N Bogdan and I B D Bryce 1991.
