(NO 5767 5702) Court Law (NR)
OS 6" map, Forfarshire and Angus, 2nd ed., (1927)
The "Court Law", an artificial mound of stones covered with earth, about 15' high, stood in a field W of Aldbar Church. When it was taken down, several cists were found in it. The contained urns, and, in some instances, human bones (Stuart 1856). The ONB (1861) notes that, though much reduced the centre of the knoll still stood 5' - 6' above the level of the field in which it stood.
Name Book 1861.
The "Court Law" exists only as a featureless swelling in a field, c.30.0m in diameter and 1.0m in height. A few stones lie scattered about. The farmer states that the plough turns up large stones and slabs from time to time, and this, together with Stuart's information, confirms that this is the site of a cairn.
Visited by OS (JLD) 8 July 1958.
