Fleming mentions the re-erection of the shaft of the old market cross against the W front of Cellardyke town hall. It is 11" square, with the angles chamfered off, and stands about 12' high. At the top is the date 1642, and a cap bearing egg-and-dart enrichment.

Millar mentions a charter for the erection of a market cross being granted in 1578.
