(NO 0885 8926) Inverey Castle (NR) (Remains of)

The castle was built about 1640 and burned in 1689. It was a plain oblong vaulted house, according to Simpson (W D Simpson 1929), but Stirton (J Stirton 1925) describes it as long, narrow and apparently without vaulted chambers.

A portion of wall was all that remained in 1925.

'The so-called 'castle' of Inverey...is nothing but an uncastellated laird's house of the later seventeenth century.'

Only the E wall of Inverey Castle remains, c. 17.0 metres long, c. 5.0metres maximum height, c. 0.9 metres thick, constructed of random masonry with rubble infilling bonded with lime mortar. No evidence of vaults; rafter socket holes in the wall support Stirton's description.
