(NO 1927 1544) Witches' Hole (NAT)

OS 6" map, (1959)

Witches Hole, a small cave in a rocky face on the north side of Castle Law, is supposed to have been the residence of some of the Witches of Abernethy. At one time it was large enough to hold 12 head of cattle, but appears to have been restricted in size by earth falling from above.

Name Book 1860.

This cave, small and easily accessible, measures 4.7m across its mouth, where its height is 1.8m. It is 3.0m in depth, the height reducing to 0.9m. There are no visible traces of habitation.

Visited by OS (W D J) 30 July 1965.

This cave in the steep N-face of Castle Law, Abernethy, measures 5.1m in greatest width by 2.8m in depth and 1.5m in height. There is no visible evidence that the cave has ever been occupied.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS, IF), 27 November 1996.
