(Name: NN 8300 1274) Cairn Wochel (NR) (Site of)

OS 6" map (1959)

Described in 1726 when the cairn was 182ft long, 30ft in sloping height and 45ft wide (A Gordon 1726). Later, but before 1793 a "stone coffin" was found in which there was a skeleton 7ft long. The cairn lay from N to S, and the "coffin" was nearly in the middle of it, with the head to the E. Most of the stones were carried away but the coffin, with a few large stones around it was preserved (OSA 1793).

When visited on 21 August 1964 all that could be seen at the OS site was a large morainic hillock, with another smaller hillock nearby. The only sign of any structure was a few laid stones on its S side, possibly part of a revetting wall-face.

A S Henshall 1972

The large hillock to which Henshall refers is centred on NN 8301 1276 and is almost certainly the site of Cairn Wochel. Other than the "few laid stones" there are no visible remains. The name is not known locally. No further information.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (EGC) 5 June 1967
