(NN 6770 4788) Carnbane Castle (NR) (Ruins of)

OS 6" map (1900)

The castle occupies a spur of an escarpment ditched to the N and may be the site of an earlier motte. The present building is fragmentary and appears to be of hall-house type, probably of 16th century date, so placed on the spur as to block the entry to a small court to the S around which can be seen foundations of walling. A staircase tower has apparently been added at the SW corner of the house.

H B Millar and J Kirkhope 1965

The remains, which survive to a height of about 15', are as described. The name is still in use. There are no certain indications that a motte formerly existed at this site.
