(NN 6731 5821) Seomar na Stainge (NR) (Site of) (Ordnance Survey Name Book [ONB] destroyed)

OS 6" map (1900)

Translated as 'The Chamber of the Ledge or Ditch'. A circular cairn of earth and stones surrounded by a ditch and bank.

M E C Stewart 1956

At NN 6736 5813 is an oval-shaped cairn measuring 16.3m E-W by 10.2m N-S and rising 1.3m above the ditch which surrounds it. There are traces

of a bank on the north side of the ditch. A considerable amount of field clearance has been dumped on it.

Surveyed at 1/2500 (apparently sited incorrectly by the OS).

Visited by OS (WDJ) 24 June 1969

An unusual cairn on a flat valley floor. It consists of a stony mound 11.0m N-S by c.15.5m E-W and 1.2m high, surrounded by a ditch 2.0m wide and 0.7m deep, with a bank 3.0m wide and 0.3m high on its outer lip measuring 22.0m E-W by c.17.0m N-S between its centres. The bank in the E and S has been reduced by the plough and the ditch in the same arcs filled with cleared stones.

Visited by OA (AA) 29 October 1974
