(NM 8392 1416) Bronze Age Cists found 1878 (NAT)

Three cists were discovered about the year 1878, some 180 metres from Melfort House, during construction of a new road on the east bank of the River Oude.

Two of the cists were of normal dimensions, measuring about 1.2 metres in length, but the third was more massive, measuring about 2.13 metres in length and was covered by a cap-stone. One of the smaller cists contained a partly cremated skeleton and a flint scraper. The large cist contained an extended inhumation, a crescentic jet necklace and a pair of bronze armlets, of which only one now survives. The flint and necklace are in the British Museum and the armlet is in the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS).
