(NM 5377 3005) Dun Breac (NAT) Fort (NR)

OS 1:10,000 map, (1976)

Fort, Dun Breac: This fort occupies the summit of a rocky boss (95m OD) on the lower slopes of Beinn nan Gobhar, about 460m N of Ardvergnish farmhouse. The ground falls away steeply over rock-strewn slopes on the S, but on the E the summit rises only 10m above the surrounding ground, and barely 4m on the remaining sides. The fort is oval on plan, measuring 39m by 25m within a single stone wall which varies from about 2m to 4m in thickness. Numerous stretches and individual stones of both wall-faces have been preserved in situ, and the core material stands to a maximum height 1.25m. The entrance, situated on the NE, measures about 1.5m in width, but not enough of the side-walls survives to indicate whether it had been checked for a door. The interior falls some 5 m from N to S and is studded with rocky outcrops; a ruined enclosure wall of no great age overrides the fort wall on the SE.
