The mound known as the Castlehill of Inverugie was the site of the early earthwork castle of the Cheynes, who held the barony of Inverugie in the 13th century.

A grass-covered earthen motte, very conspicuously sited on top of a rise. It measures 31.0m in diameter and 3.6m maximum height, with a flattish top 14.0m in diameter, slightly raised at the NW side. A slight depression in the SW may be the remains of a ditch but ploughing has obliterated any trace of it elsewhere.

Surveyed at 1:2500.

Visited by OS (AA) 10 January 1969.

Barrow is presumably referring to this feature when he notes that 'it may be that Hangmans Hill close to the ruins of Inverugie Castle (NK14NW 3) is the site of a motte-castle built by Ralph le Nain' (who lived in the late 12th century).

(Location cited as NK 1022 4864: nominated as Site of Regional Significance). This grass-covered earthern motte is conspicuously situated on top of a slight rise at an altitude of 40m OD. Air photography presents the slight suggestion of a large enclosure, possibly the bailey, bailey adjoining the motte on the W.
