(NJ 9176 4695) Castle (NR) (site of)

OS 6" map (1959)

To the E of Place Croft are the remains of an apparently artificial mound, mostly destroyed by the construction of the Buchan Railway, when the foundations of a building were discovered on the summit. According to tradition, this was the Old Castle of Maud, said to have been the residence of the Earl Marischal. The foundations indicated that it was similar to Clackriach (NJ94NW 1).

Two or three old defaced coins and a stone cup were found by the workmen.

Name Book 1871; J Milne 1898

No trace of a castle. The "mound" appears to be part of a natural spur, cut through by the railway.
