Mr Maitland has a largely unprovenanced collection of stone and polished axes, leaf-shaped and barbed-and-tanged arrowheads, and spindle-whorls which are said to have been found in the vicinity of Balhalgardy (NJ 760 238).

In the collection is a Neolithic stone axe found 'some years ago' at NJ 7548 2381 and another from 'Mid Harlaw' (name NJ 749 248).

[Classification amended to Polished, Stone Axes, Barbed-and-Tanged, Flint Arrowheads; Leaf-shaped, Flint Arrowheads, Spindle Whorls]. Mr Robert Maitland, West Balhalgardy, has in his possession nine stone axes (three of which are polished), two leaf-shaped flint arrowheads, and two barbed-and-tanged flint arrowheads, which were found in the field in which the Battle of Harlaw is alleged to have been fought (NJ c. 751 241). The whorls noted by the OS in 1964 were not seen on the date of visit.

In addition, there are two stone spindle whorls from Balhalgardy in the Marischal Museum, Aberdeen. The first (ABDUA: 19095) measures 33.5mm in diameter by 6.5mm in thickness, the second (ABDUA: 19149) 36mm in diameter, and the latter is decorated with radial lines.
