(NJ 6709 4630) Stone Circle (NR) (Site of).

OS 6" map, Banffshire, 2nd ed., (1905).

Not to be confused with Carlin Stone or Cairn Riv, possible stone circle (NJ 6744 4659) or stone circle (NJ 6729 4633) at Backhill of Drachlaw, for which see NJ64NE 4 and NJ64NE 6 respectively.

West Circle, Backhill of Drachlaw: the circle is shown on the OS 6" map, Banffshire, (1905) as having six stones, and about 28ft in diameter. Five of the stones have been used for building two nearby dykes, the sixth for lintels.

F R Coles 1903; Information from Mr P Anderson, tenant, Backhill of Drachlaw.

No trace of this circle remains, but in the stone wall enclosing the stackyard at Backhill of Drachlaw are five large boulders, 0.8 - 1.2m high, 0.8 - 1.0m long, and c.0.6m thick, probably the five referred to by Coles (1903). The whereabouts of the 6th stone was not evident.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 7 September 1964.
