(NJ 2190 6286) Little Cross (NR)

OS 25" map, (1871)

The Little Cross stands where the approach to the Cathedral leaves the High Street, Elgin. It was, apparently first erected in 1402 AD and marked the limits of the Cathedral Sanctuary. In its present form it consists of a tall column set on a flight of steps and capped by a sun-dial dated 1733, during which year the Cross was probably re-built but the copestone with carved figures is from some much earlier structure. The sun-dial and top of the column are now in the Museum having been replaced in facsimile in 1941.

R G Cant and I G Lindsay 1954.

NJ 2191 6286. Generally described above. The original sundial was seen in Elgin Museum.

Visited by OS (R D L) 12 December 1962.
