(NF 9024 6534) Dun Ban (NAT)

OS 6"map, Inverness-shire, 2nd ed., (1904)

Dun Ban...occupies the entire surface of the islet measuring about 30 yards in diameter and rising about 5-10ft above water level, and is unconnected to the shore by a causeway. The islet is fortified around the edge by a slight outer wall 3ft thick, further supplemented by a strong inner rampart 5 1/2ft wide, most clearly apparent on the N and W. At the E there is a clearly defined boat entrance 11ft wide externally but narrowing inwards and upwards over the rock. The N side of the water-gate is natural rock but to the S is a constructed wall 9ft in length. The area enclosed by the two concentric lines of defence is about 55ft in diameter. Facing the water-gate on the E is a circular construction measuring 20ft over walls about 2ft 6ins thick and 3ft in height with a doorway in the E.

E Beveridge 1911; RCAHMS 1928.

Dun Ban is as described above, except that there are two more similar circular structures, one built against the inner wall face on its N side.

Visited by OS (N K B) 11 June 1965.
