(NF 1005 9951) Tobar Childa (TI)

OS 6" map, annotated by J Mathieson (1928).

Tobar Childa: a holy well, described by Macaulay as being 'in universal use by the community' and situated 'near the heart of the village'. Williamson considers this to apply to the (17th century or earlier) medieval village, to the N of the 1830-60 settlement (see NF19NW 15). From Mathieson's photograph, the well is uncovered and issues from between rocks.

K Macaulay 1764; J Mathieson 1928; K Williamson and J M Boyd 1960.

Tobar Childa is a natural spring, and does not appear to have been covered.

Visited by OS (J L D), 7 August 1967.
