(ND 2234 5167) Standing Stones (NR)

OS 1:10,000 map, (1976)

These two stones probably represent the remains of a stone circle. The eastern stone (A) is oblong in section, 4ft 10ins high, 13ft in circumference, and 4ft longest diameter. Stone B, 21ft 3ins W, lies displaced; it is 6ft long, 2ft 8ins broad, and 1ft 9ins thick.

The ONB (1871) mentions a few smaller stones, partially sunk in the ground near stone 'A', "which have probably been standing at one time". RCAHMS 1911; Name Book 1871.

These two stones are as described by the RCAHMS. No other remains of this probable stone circle can be found. There are several smaller stones nearby.

Visited by OS (N K B) 22 October 1965.

No change to the previous field report.

Visited by OS (J M) 11 March 1982.
