(NC 7280 5394) Enclosure (NR), (NC 7282 5394) Hut Circle (NR)
OS 6"map, (1964)
Above Loch ma Naire are two earthen circles, abut 30ft in diameter with entrances in the E and NE; there are a number of small cairns near them.
J Horsburgh 1870.
There is an enclosure and a hut cicle accompanied by field clearance heaps above Loch ma Naire.
Visited by OS (J L D) 5 May 1960.
Of the two features published on OS 6"map, (1964) the "enclosure" is a hut circle, probably one of the "earthen circles" noted by Horsburgh (See also NC75SW 5). It measures 10.0m NW-SE by 9.0m transversely with a wall surviving to 0.5m high and spread to 2.5m broad; the entrance is in SE arc. The published "hut circle" is a heather-covered pit or surface quarry, 4.0m in diameter and 0.3m deep, with a slight rim.
On the downslope W of the hut is an associated field system comprising stone clearance heaps, at best 10.0m apart, interspersed with sporadic rickles and banks of cleared stones. There are occasional scatterd mounds of clearance beyond the main area of the field systm. One or two measurable cultivation plots are discernible, about 20.0m by 15.0m. Revised at 1:10,000.
