(Area HY 47 12) Cist found at Cleat, with cremation burial

Information from E McGillivray, Librarian, Kirkwall 1 May 1973.

HY 4698 1175. The cist was found by Mr Rendall whilst ploughing a slight natural rise in 1969. (Information from Mr G Rendall, Cleat, Work Road, Kirkwall). The cist contained cremated bones and was oriented N-S. Its approximate measurements were 0.9m x 0.5m by 0.5m deep. The four slabs together with the coverstone are laid near the find spot at the side of the field.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (ISS) 23 May 1973.

The cist was found by G Rendall of Cleat while ploughing a slight natural rise in 1969 and was excavated by E MacGillivray, E Marwick and others. Orientated N-S. Externally 0.9m long by 0.5m wide by 0.5m deep. The cover-stone and sides were single flags (may not have been a base slab). Fill of loose ploughsoil with straw mixed in, just as in the field generally. Marwick reports cremated bones in the cist. A photograph shows the excavators removing such and a cardboard box in the background. The bones may have been removed, but have not been traced.
