(HY 2484 0516) Chapel & Burial Ground {NR} (Site of)

(Undated) OS map.

Orkney SMR Reference: OR 1914

The enclosure of which the name is applied is said to be the site of a 12th century chapel and burial ground, possibly dedicated to St. Bridge used prior to the erection of St. Colm's Chapel (Orkney 106SW4). All traces were removed during cultivation 'some years ago'.

Name Book 1880; RCAHMS 1946, visited 6 August 1929.

All that remains of this chapel and burial ground is a grass-covered mound 0.9m high. Mr. H. Mowatt states that about 100 years ago, cattle used to be sheltered in the ruins which had narrow mullioned windows. He is convinced that the chapel was dedicated to St. Bride. No finds have been made. (Information from Mr H Mowatt, Oban Elu, Graemsay, Orkney.)

Visited by OS (NKB) 17 September 1964.

HY 248 051 Rectangular enclosure and structures, post-medieval. Four mounds, at least one of which is a prehistoric burnt mound.
