(HP 6304 1088) Cairn (NR)

Stone cists found AD 1865

OS 6" map, Shetland, 2nd ed., (1900).

A heel-shaped cairn which has been considerably disturbed and robbed, partly for building the dyke that crosses it. The cairn material is large angular stones and remains up to 3' 6" high.

Two cists, 4 and 4ft 6ins long, apparently set at ground level, are exposed in the cairn. A third, similar, was already visible in 1865 when the fourth, 6ft long, was found (Tate 1866).

A S Henshall 1963; RCAHMS 1946; R Tate 1866.

As described by Henshall.

Visited by OS (RL) 29th April 1969.
