(HU 1853 6050) Erd House (NR) (Remains of)

OS 6" map, Shetland, 2nd ed. (1903).

An earth-house, of which all that can be seen is an incomplete chamber, dry-built and roughly circular in plan, with a diameter of some 9'. The lintelled roof of a passage, as well as two other cells are said to have been visible about the end of the 19th century but a trial excavation failed to locate them.

RCAHMS 1946, visited 1930.

All that can be seen at this site are the amorphous remains of the chamber described by RCAHMS, now almost destroyed by coast erosion. There is little evidence to suggest an earth-house.

Revised at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 19 June 1968.
