When surveyed in 1929, this site was visible as a slightly hollowed mound, some 30m in diameter. It stood up to 2m high and there were traces of a wall to the NE side. It was located on the margins of cultivated land and was thought to be the remains of a much denuded broch or chambered cairn. By 1973, all that survived was an uneven, roughly circular area of ground, c.20m in diameter and it was thought to have suffered coastal erosion. This site was not located during this survey. [...] |

A78: (NF 7129 0426) immediately adjacent to NF70SW 85 is a prominent 2-3m high grassed-over mound with a few blocks of stone showing through the sides, 9 x 7.5m. This appears to be a similar monument to examples found on the Tanagaval peninsula and in the Borve valley, though with less stone visible. they have been interpreted as prehistoric, possibly Iron Age, houses and excavation of an example at NL69NW 57 on the Tanagaval peninsula produced about twenty small sherds of hand-made pottery thought to be Iron Age, and including one rim of Roman Iron Age date. A75: Rectangular building, 5.75 x 4.5m, with stone facing and earth core walls. No visible doorway. It stands on a larger stone edged platform 7.9 x 6.6m which could be the remains of an earlier structure. [...] |
