Mutiny Stones, Byrecleugh (BRW 1) NT 622 590 NT65NW 1

This long cairn is situated in open moorland 1.1 km NNW of Byrecleugh steading. It measures 82m in length and tapers from 27.5m in breadth and 2.5m in height at the ENE end to 9.8m by 0.9m at the WSW end. The cairn has been disturbed by the construction of a sheep stell and was trenched in 1871 and 1924. Two stretches of dry-stone walling near the E end of the S side are probably the result of recent reconstruction.

RCAHMS 1980, visited August 1979.

(RCAHMS 1915, pp. 130-1, No. 249; Craw 1925; Henshall 1963-72, ii, 404-6).
