PROJECT |
The Commission has been working in partnership with the Cairngorms National Park Authority on a pilot project (to March 2012) that explored ways in which members of the local community in the Aviemore area could record aspects of their archaeological, architectural and industrial heritage. Commission staff gave lectures, led guided architectural tours of Aviemore and Kingussie, and provided a series of archaeological training workshops in which participants were shown how to identify monuments in the landscape, how to record, survey and map them, and how to find out more from other sources. The plan was later used as the basis of an illustration redrawn in vector graphics software at the same scale. [...] |

FIELD VISIT |
The remains of a rectangular building and a small enclosure stand in rough pasture on a hillside about 260m WNW of Alvie Home Farm. The building, which has been constructed of quarried rubble, measures 11.8m from NNE to SSW by 5m transversely over denuded walls standing no more than 0.4m in height, best-preserved on the WNW side, where the building has been set into the slope. The enclosure lies to the ESE, and has a lambing pen built over its NNE wall. The 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire 1874, sheet lxxiii) shows a roofed building at this location, but it does not appear on the 2nd edition of the map (1903), by which time the ground had been planted with conifers.
