Previous surveyors of East Lomond fort (NO20NW 20) have described ‘two lines of terracing well down the hill-side’ (RCAHMS 1933, 143) and ‘two considerable scarps, almost certainly the remains of ramparts constructed as extra defence’ (OS 1968), and they are depicted as part of the fort on the current edition of OS Mastermap. Both features are visible running around the ENE flank of the hill about 140m from the summit, and each extends for about 140m in length before fading away on less steep ground. The present survey reinterprets both features as post-medieval trackways that led to the extensive scree slopes on the N flank of the hill. Three further tracks were recorded to the N and NW, one of which leads into a quarry (NS 2452 0634) though in most areas stone may have been taken from the surface of the scree leaving less obvious traces.
