The bothy of Stac Lee, first described during a visit to St Kilda in 1695 (Martin 1749 edn, 20), is perched high on its SSW face and accessible only through rock climbing. It provided accommodation for the St Kildans during the harvest of gannets each August, ensuring that they would not miss their chance if poor weather made daily landings impossible. The bothy was not visited during the RCAHMS survey of St Kilda and its location and outline plan rely on the interpretation of aerial photographs. Notes and photographs provided by P Moore, S Murray and R Simpson after a visit in June 1985 allowed a description and an illustrative plan and section to be published by RCAHMS (1988, 30-31, see also Gannon and Geddes 2015, 87-8).
