The original entrance to the Forth and Clyde Canal from the River Clyde at Bowling was completed in 1790, designed by engineer Robert Whitworth. The lock, located on the S side of the Bowling Basin (NS47SE 113), measured 46m from NE to SW by 7m transversely and opened directly into the tidal river. It was therefore built with an unusually deep chamber in order to deal with the varying heights of the water. Construction of a second lock (NS47SW 64.03) 35m to the NW, which connected the basin to the newly constructed Bowling Harbour (NS47SW 64), was completed in 1849.
