This bridge is described in the 1859 OS Name Book (Lanark Volume 20, page 84) as ‘A private bridge of three arches over the River Clyde, erected by the late proprietor of Milton Lockhart Estate, in Carluke Parish. The bridge, which spans 40m, once led to the former Milton-Lockhart mansion (NS84NW 45), which was transported by actor Masakiko Tsugawa to Japan and re-erected in 1988. The former lodge has been restored but its main architectural features are as described in the Buildings at Risk Register.

Formerly, the estate was named ‘Milton’, but was changed to Milton-Lockhart in accordance with the conditions of a legacy when it was bought in 1828 by William Lockhart M.P. for Lanarkshire.
