Stonebyres Hydro-electric Power Station, located about 0.5km downstream from Stonebyres Falls near Kirkfieldbank on the NW bank of the River Clyde, was built in 1927. It is one of two stations that made up the Lanark Hydro Electric Scheme, the other being Bonnington Power Station (NS84SE 131) just above Bonnington Linn in New Lanark. They are the oldest hydro-electric stations in the UK electricity industry. Stonebyres station is powered by the head of water created by Stonebyres Linn. There is no dam, but instead there is a tilting weir above the falls which regulates the flow of the river. It has a capacity to generate 6MW of electricity and was automated in the 1970s.
