Between the 29th and 31st August 2006, the RCAHMS Commissioners were taken to visit a number of significant sites recently recorded by the staff across Central Scotland. To inform this trip an illustrated guide was prepared with a brief summary description of each site, and an introductory text. These short site descriptions were entered into the Canmore database in 2017, but readers are advised to consult the final publication for the most detailed account.

1019534	DESCRIPTIVE ACCOUNTS	PUBLICATION ACCOUNT	The Britannia has a complex history, built within the confines of a commercial warehouse, signs of which are still evident; it began in the 1850s as Campbell’s Music Saloon, an early, unlicensed ‘song and supper’ room style of music hall. These halls usually developed out of pubs, with benches and tables for eating, and a high narrow stage for the entertainers. [...]	2006
1019535	DESCRIPTIVE ACCOUNTS	PUBLICATION ACCOUNT	A church was founded on the site in 1484. This was re-constructed as a city church in 1592 when the existing tower was built. The steeple was added in 1630-6. The church was destroyed by fire in 1793 and James Adam designed the existing building. The initial proposals were far grander and included the redevelopment of neighbouring streets. The baroque courtyard walls and gateway were added in 1895-1900 by JJ Burnet to screen a Caledonian Railway tunnel airshaft. McGurn, Logan and Duncan converted the church into a theatre in 1981. 1019536	DESCRIPTIVE ACCOUNTS	PUBLICATION ACCOUNT	The origins of the development lie in the Bazaar founded by James Cleland in 1817 to house the green and cheese markets. George Murray added the City Hall in 1841. He supported his new hall on iron columns over the existing markets. The market halls were re-developed in 1852 and again in 1882. Shops were added along Candleriggs in 1898 and AB MacDonald for the Office of Public Works replaced John Carrick’s Central Police Office and extended the markets to the SE in 1907. The City Halls have been converted into a multi-purpose exhibition hall and the markets are now a gourmet shopping centre. [...]	2006
